List of Patriarchs of the Church of the East
The Patriarch of the Church of the East (Patriarch of Babylon or Patriarch of the East) is the patriarch, or leader and head bishop(sometimes referred to as Catholicos or universal leader) of the Church of the East. The position dates to the early centuries of Christianity in Persia, and the church has been known by a variety of names, including Nestorian Church, the Persian Church, the Sassanid Church, or East Syrian. In the 16th and 17th century the Church experienced a series of splits, resulting in a series of competing patriarchs and lineages. Today, the two principal churches that emerged from these splits, the Assyrian Church of the East and the Chaldean Catholic Church, each have their own patriarch, the Patriarch of the Assyrian Church of the East and the Patriarch of Babylon of the Chaldeans, respectively.

Please note: The TABLE OR TREE OF LIFE OF APOSTOLIC SUCCESSION of CATHOLICOS was translated
by H.H. the late Mar Eshai Shimun XXIII in 1964 from the Book of Marganitha (The Pearl) On the Truth of Christianity written by Mar Odisho, Metropolitan of NISSIBIN and Armenia, A.D. 1298.
* WITHIN THIS PERIOD, the ambitious rabban (monk) Sulaka d’beth Ballo, Aqraya, took refuge with the Roman Church, thus introducing the Roman Catholic into the Holy Ancient Church of the East and
acquiring the name Chaldeans for his followers.
**AS THE RESULT OF MAJOR SPLIT caused by Monk Sulaka, Eshuyow Shimun XIII moved the Patriarchal Seat from Alkosh near Mosul to Azerbaijan, Iran, and finally to Qudshanis in Hakkari, Kurdistan.
+++ The Ancient Church of the East (Syriac: ܥܕܬܐ ܥܬܝܩܬܐ ܕܡܕܢܚܐ, Arabic: كنيسة المشرق القديمة) separated from the Assyrian Church of the East in 1964, after Mar Eshai Shimun XXIII, the Patriarch of the Assyrian Church of the East introduced reforms – including, the use of the new Roman liturgical calendar rather than the traditional calendar - which were not supported by a certain number of traditionalist followers of the church.
The schism arose in resistance to these changes made to the Church, thereby causing a separate Ancient Church of the East to be established and centered in Baghdad.
In 1968, the followers of the newly established Church elected a rival Catholicos-Patriarch Mar Thoma Darmo while Mar Shimun XXIII continued as the official head of the Assyrian Church of the East.
Mar Thoma Darmo was its first Catholicos-Patriarch (1968-1969). The present head of the Church is Catholicos-Patriarch Mar Addai II since 1970.
Note Further:
+++ Mar Levi Bar Thoma accepted and signed the Christological Declaration and Profession of Faith of the Ancient Church of the East last February 24, 2008, at the Apostolic & Catholic Church of the East Chancery, 11-B Mirasol Townhouse, Mirasol St., Murphy, Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines, - “. . . as an oath of obedience to H.H. Mar Addai II, Catholicos Patriarch and the Supreme Universal Head of the Ancient Church of the East, and any one who succeed Him, on the Holy See of Seleucia-Ctesiphon” - in the presence of Rev. Dr. Khoshaba Georges, The Patriarchal Delegate-Visitator & Priest of St. George’s Parish of London, Great Britain, and Deacon Georgis Zayia Berum, Deacon of St.George’s Parish of London, Great Britain; and, the Christian Community in the Philippine Diaspora.
